Over 25 years of Early Childhood Education with Christie

Childcare and Education

With a career in Early Childhood spanning over 25 years, anyone would be lucky to learn from Christie.

It’s clear that for Christie, her long career comes from a real passion for the profession. After all this time, she admits she still loves to share everything she knows.

‘I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with students, sometimes they can’t get me to shut up!’

Christie Hickford

But before her life as a Trainer and Assessor at Foundation Education, she was first and foremost an Early Childhood Educator – working in a variety of different roles from Kindergarten Assistant to Family Daycare Educational Leader.

For Christie, it all began with a strong connection to the topic of Early Childhood – she always knew it was what she wanted to do.

‘I planned my year 11 and 12 electives around this and knew I would move into studying Early Childhood right out of high school,’ she says. ‘I have always wanted to be an advocate for children.’

Since that choice, Christie hasn’t looked back

After she started working in the industry, she found that she always loved building relationships with children and parents, as well as supporting children with unique needs.

Her favourite part, though, was those first moments in the morning when the doors to the centre would open.

‘That feeling of having children run to you when they arrive and knowing you can be a safe haven for children and guide them through their first five years of life. That’s the best part!’

But after a decade, Christie’s passion for supporting, educating and caring for children, naturally became a passion for the profession – sharing that for her, it ‘has been amazing seeing the role of the Early Childhood Educator evolve and gain more recognition.’

Just like children at the start of their lives, Christie saw that it’s essential to give budding Educators the best possible start to their careers.

‘Sharing my knowledge and passion with Educators and advocating for the profession have been a driving force. So many students complete their qualification without real support and guidance and that can be a concern.’

Christie's move to Foundation Education

So for the past twelve years, she’s been working as a Trainer and Assessor, helping to shape the next generations of educators.

Her years of practical experience are a vital part of how she supports her students, as she can help to bring context to whatever they’re learning in the classroom.

‘We can’t just rely on theory all the time. At Foundation Education, we can share our real experience and real-world examples, which helps our students immensely.’

And since joining Foundation Education, she’s become a real supporter of the unique ways that our courses are delivered.

‘I'm really proud of the learning materials and resources we offer our students to make their studies informative and enjoyable,’ she says. ‘I also enjoy sharing our unique delivery methods with our industry partners. Our students get hands-on experience in some of Australia’s leading Early Childhood facilities.’

But what makes Foundation Education so unique, for Christie, is the sense of innovation, while keeping in line with current practices and learning styles.

‘We are evolving… We are continuously engaging in industry consultation to ensure we are providing innovative, compliant and above all else quality training to all students who choose to enrol with us.’

For anyone thinking about pursuing a career in Early Childhood, Christie advises that the desire to work with children and their learning is only a small part of the picture!

‘This is the career to pursue if you would like to become an Early Childhood professional that is an advocate for the early years,’ she says.

‘You will be supporting children to become incredible humans.’
