Changing careers can be daunting, but it might be what you need if you’re unhappy in your current profession.
Whether you’ve lost your job or you’re simply lacking motivation, switching to a new industry could help you get back on track. Not sure how to change careers or if now is the right time? These are some of the reasons it could be a great decision to make at the moment.
Thousands of people lost their jobs in Australia due to COVID-19. From higher education to tourism, many industries were decimated. In addition to wiping out jobs, the pandemic also made the hiring market extremely competitive. Even as lockdowns lifted, there weren’t nearly enough jobs to go around.
With a vaccine on the horizon, most sectors are slowly starting to bounce back. But if you still can’t see a stable future in your industry, changing careers could help you find a more secure and pandemic-proof career.
Jobs are changing rapidly these days, making the future of work hard to predict. The only thing we know for sure is that technology will continue to have a massive effect on employment. A McKinsey study predicts that up to 30% of all work may potentially be displaced by the adoption of automation by 2030. Staying in your current career might seem like a safe option, but it could put you at risk of being made obsolete.
The things that made you valuable in your career in the past may disappear in the not too distant future. You’ll need to consider if it’s worth studying a new area or waiting out your current job to see the impact of automation.
Well, not everyone. But lots of people are changing jobs. An ING Future Focus report found that 1 in 3 Aussies are considering a career change post pandemic. The same report found that at least half of millennials plan to look for a new job due to increasing anxiety about employment opportunities. Starting a new career from scratch can be tough, but at least you won’t be alone.
This disruption to the job market may also minimise the impact of any time you need to take out of the workforce for retraining. Having a gap in your resume is usually considered a bad thing, but plenty of people will have employment gaps that coincide with COVID-19.
