It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic hit the job market hard.
By May 2020, almost 1 million Australians had already lost their jobs. More recently, the unemployment rate rose to 7% as JobKeeper payments ended for thousands of Australians.
Even as the nation begins to recover from the effects of the pandemic, there are still occasional outbreaks and lockdowns that promptly put people out of work.
If you’re looking to transition into a more stable career path during these uncertain times, you might want to consider a so-called “pandemic-proof” job. These are jobs that have stood the test of time and will always be needed in society.
Here are some of the pandemic-proof jobs to consider and how you might go about getting into these roles.
Allied health assistants work with health professionals to provide patient care, covering everything from admin to general support. With the COVID-19 pandemic putting immense stress on healthcare services, allied health assistants proved themselves to be essential for the day-to-day operations of healthcare practices.
In fact, Seek predicts a 12.4% job growth over the next five years as more healthcare professionals seek to employ assistants.
If you can see yourself working as an allied health assistant, consider completing a HLT33021 Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance to ensure you are properly certified and highly employable.
Practice managers oversee the daily operations and admin of medical, dental, legal or veterinary practices. During stressful or chaotic times, a highly-skilled practice manager is needed to keep the business side of things running smoothly.
The importance of the role became abundantly clear during the COVID-19 pandemic, with demand for the role being projected to grow by 7.2% in the next five years (Seek).
To transition into this role, start by undertaking a HLT57715 Diploma of Practice Management. While formal qualifications often aren’t necessary to become a practice manager, it’s a great way of setting yourself apart from the competition.
The COVID-19 pandemic saw huge changes in the education landscape, with educators having to quickly adapt to remote teaching and snap lockdowns. Education assistants became key to helping schools adapt to challenging circumstances, with Job Outlook predicting very strong future growth for the role.
If you can see yourself working in this pandemic-proof role, start by completing a CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support. The most common education level for education assistants is a Certificate III/IV, so obtaining a Certificate IV will set you up for good employment prospects.
If you’re not looking to change industries but would still like to pandemic-proof your job, it may be worth considering further training. By strengthening your skillset, you can make yourself an indispensable member of the team.
A BSB50618 Diploma of Human Resources Management, for example, can help you prepare for challenging situations as a HR manager, while a Business course can help entrepreneurs adapt in the face of difficult business circumstances.
